Meatballs ɑre super-quick to mak fοr a weeknight supper
ɑnd tһere are many ways to serve tһеm (see tip).
The veal in tһeѕe giveѕ a lightness to the result,
ƅut you сan swap it oout for alⅼ beef, or flavourful pork mince.

SERVES 4
4 tbsp olive oil, рlus extra fⲟr tһe onion
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped
400ɡ tin chopped tomatoes
200ց white bread (dɑʏ old, іf possiЬⅼe)
wһole milk (enough tо soak tһe bread)
500ɡ beef mince
250ց English veal mince
2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, ⲣlus extra to serve
4 anchovies, finely chopped
2 tgsp chopped flat-leaf parsley
salt аnd freshly ground black pepper
350ɡ dried spaghetti, to ssrve (optional;
see tіp)
1Fіrst make ɑ tomato sauce. In a saucepan, heat a dash of olive oil over a medium
heat,then add half thee chopped onion аnd half tһe garlic, thеn sauté for 10 mknutes tо soften. Add tһе tomatoes annd ѡhen the liquid
ѕtarts to bubble, reduce tօ a simmer and leave tⲟ cook,
stirring occasionbally (aƅout 20 mіnutes, to creɑte a thiｃk sauce),
while yoᥙ mɑke the meatballs.
2 Ӏn a bowl, soaak the bread іn the milk until soft.
In ɑnother bowl, mix tһe beef, veal, parmesan, anchovies, half tthe parsley ɑnd the rrest of
tһe onions аnd garlic. Thеn ɑdd the soaked bread, lightly
squeezing ɑny excess milk fｒom it first. Mix wеll and season wіth salt ɑnd pepper.
Mould the mixture іnto 12-14 meatballs.
3 Put tһe 4 tablespoonbs of olive oil iin ɑ large frying pan over а medium heat.
Wһen hot, add the meatballs, tսrning (for aboᥙt 5 minutes) tօ ensuure tһey color аll
oѵer. If necessɑry, cook іn batchhes so thеy are not alⅼ squashed togetһer, setting еach batch aside on ɑ plate while you
colok tһe remainder.
4 To finish, remove the meatballs fгom the pann and set aside.
Poᥙr thee tomato sauce ingo tһe frying pan ovеr а medium heat.
Put the meatballs back іnto thе pan foｒ a fᥙrther 4-5 minutｅs to cook tһrough.
Sprinkle witһ the remaining parsley ƅefore serving.
TІΡ Yοu can serve the meatballs as thеy ϲome, ߋr ߋn top of spaghetti.

to thｅ packet instructions untijl аl dente. Drain it іn a colander, reserving

fine dining environment and the ability to work a seven- day rotating roster.
The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy when booking Qantas flight
by personally requesting them from Mr Joyce are made in a new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.
Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his

Lady Gaga is set to release her seventh studio album in February.
Despite lead single Disease stalling on the Hot 100 at No.
27, the 38-year-old is forging ahead with her next album, which she described as both ‘fun’ and ‘darker.’
Speaking to Vogue magazine about the project, Gaga said that she’s
been focused on the production side of her new songs.
‘I love producing — I always have — and something that
was really important to me making my seventh studio album was blending live instrumentation with programming,’ she explained.
‘The album is chaotic from a genre perspective — it is genre-bending, and I think in that way is a deeply
personal look into my mind as a producer and the way I
think about music.’
She also said that the album has a ‘darker pop’ sound that’s more in line with her iconic 2009 album,
The Fame Monster.
However, fans need not be worried that Gaga is going too somber with her sound.
‘The album is not extremely serious in that it’s very fun and meant to be
enjoyed at a party, in a club, or at home having personal fun time — to be free of your
worries at home or walking through life,’ she insisted.
Lady Gaga is focused on releasing her seventh
studio album this February following the disappointing reception to lead single Disease
Gaga released the album’s lead single Disease last month to rave reviews from music
critics, who lauded it as a return to the star’s roots.
Unfortunately, the acclaim failed to translate to the charts, with Disease debuting at No.
27 on the Hot 100 – her worst entry for a lead single in 16 years.
On the bright side, Gaga is currently enjoying one of
her biggest hits in years thanks to her Bruno Mars duet, Die With a Smile.

BRUSSELS, Nov 28 (Reuters) – France, Germany and Sweden called on the incoming European Commission on Thursday to ensure the future of battery production in Europe and avoid relying on China to
meet its needs for the green transition.
In a paper released ahead of an EU ministers’ meeting to discuss EU competitiveness on Thursday, the three EU members said European battery companies faced common challenges of scaling up
in a global playing field that was not level.
The EU needs to cut red tape, speed up approval processes, create better routes to funding and markets for new companies
in the sector and allocate more EU funding for the
battery industry, they said.
“If we are to succeed with the green transition we need to get the European battery sector flying and taking a proper share of the market,” Swedish Industry Minister Ebba Busch told reporters before the meeting in Brussels.
The issue is acute for Sweden after Northvolt filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States last
week. The Swedish government has repeatedly said it won’t
invest in Northvolt to save the company, which has been Europe’s biggest
hope for an electric vehicle battery champion.
Busch said a strong message from Brussels that European battery making had
a solid future would increase the chances for
Northvolt to secure new capital from other sources.
China has taken a huge lead in powering EVs, controlling 85%
of global battery cell production, International Energy Agency
data shows. Busch said the European Union needed to learn from its previous reliance on Russian gas and not become dependent again on an economic rival.
“The green transition might end up becoming a Chinese transition in Europe… Just look at solar cell or wind power sector, a lot of that has been taken over by third-country investment,” she said.
The new European Commission, which takes over on Dec.
1, plans in its first 100 days to issue an outline of how the bloc can compete economically
while meeting its climate targets.

and distribution, according to the report.

A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous “insiders” or “rival executives” are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor

‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s opening in China, and will continue
to earn revenue throughout its home viewing and ancillary
run.’
So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and
$165 million globally after two weeks of release.
In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4 million globally after three days of release.
The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film was considered a surefire

he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of the film, with
DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s
LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it
makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide. Not a billion. People showed up because
that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC Studios
logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end
of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment
to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and
Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no
to Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but

a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was

The studio wanted to film in London which would have

remaining static.
A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at
the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back

Namibians returned to vote on Friday in 36 polling stations reopened two days after a chaotic election, set to test the ruling party’s 34-year grip
on power, was marred by technical problems.
Tensions are mounting in the historically stable and peaceful southern African nation where Wednesday’s election was marked by long delays and labelled a “sham” by the opposition.
Some people waited 12 hours in line to vote in presidential and legislative polls,
billed as the toughest yet for the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party, in power since Namibia’s 1990 independence from South africa.
Wednesday’s queues were caused by many technical problems, including issues with
tablets used to register voters and shortages
of ballot papers.
In some cases, torches used to show up invisible ink had run out of batteries and
mobile voting teams had left areas with voters still in the queues, it said.
Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral
commission extended the vote for a second time,
giving Namibians until Saturday evening to vote.
In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling station picked to reopen, about
60 people showed up on Friday, including Kluivert Muuondjo who arrived at
4:30 am.
The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:00 pm
on Wednesday but left before being able to vote as he had exams the next day.

“Everyone will have the chance to vote,” he said. But because
Namibians can vote at any given polling station, he was worried
“everyone will flock to one place again.”
The disarray led to angry complaints from opposition parties
with some calling for a halt in the electoral process.
Opposition parties were scheduled to meet on Friday and issue a joint statement, according to Christine Aochamus who represents
the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) party.
Youth unemployment, enduring inequalities and the emergence of a generation born after independence are challenging
support towards SWAPO which has ruled since 1990.
Its candidate, vice-president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah,
who could become the first woman to lead the country if elected,
could face an unprecedented second round in the mineral rich country.
“To open only one place in Khomas (the region of which the capital is part of) is absurd,” said voter Ensley Engermund,
who also said he couldn’t vote on Wednesday because of long queues
despite trying four different polling stations.
“Only 1.5 millions voters are registered and we get this chaos?” asked the 49-year-old security agent.
“It was to get people frustrated.”

‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand how these things happen.’
Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male
flatmate and Jackie’s mother Julie.
‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the door,
she put her face to the screen to see inside and that flatmate was right
there in the living room, pants down, w***ing,’ a shocked Tony read.
The revelations come after Jackie spoke for the first time about her years-long battle with drugs which saw her secretly go to rehab at The

Dec 4 (Reuters) – Wall Street’s main indexes climbed on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 and the
Nasdaq touching record highs driven by gains in technology
stocks, while investors awaited comments from U.S.
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell later in the day.
Crucial jobs data is due on Friday and investors are shoring
up bets on a third consecutive interest-rate cut at
the central bank’s Dec. 17-18 meeting.
Salesforce provided the biggest boost to the blue-chip Dow on the day, jumping 8.8% to an all-time high after the enterprise
cloud company beat Street estimates for third-quarter revenue and raised the
lower end of its annual revenue forecast.
Other cloud companies also jumped, with ServiceNow and Datadog
adding 5.6% each.
Information Technology stocks hit a record high, buoyed by
gains in megacaps such as Microsoft and Nvidia.
Marvell Technology advanced 21.6% to a record
high after the chipmaker forecast fourth-quarter revenue above analyst estimates,
while the broader Semiconductor index rose 1.6%.
“Numbers from technology (Salesforce and Marvell) once again were pretty amazing and it just seems that we can continue to grow and hit these earnings. These numbers continue to give the tech rally legs,” said JJ
Kinahan, CEO at IG Group North America.

The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy
when booking Qantas flight by personally requesting them from Mr Joyce are
made in a new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former

Georgiana Cavendish (1757-1806), a lover of gambling – and threesomes

turned into blocks of flats. With their disappearance went their furnishings, objets
and paintings. But what their wonderful rooms looked like can be
seen in London: Lost Interiors, a book compiled
from superb black-and-white photographs of these amazing houses,
some of which belonged to aristocratic landowners, others to plutocrats or society
figures.

Most of the townhouses – those used for the Season rather than permanent residences – were clustered
round Park Lane, Mayfair or on Piccadilly, like Devonshire House.
Here once lived the fifth Duke of Devonshire
and his wife Georgiana (pronounced jaw-janer), whom he had married in 1774 when she was just 17.
She was a celebrated beauty who quickly became a leader of
fashion, famous for her towering hairstyles three feet
high, decorated with birds, fruit, even ships in sail.
The couple spent 20 years in a ménage à trois with Lady Elizabeth Foster, Georgiana’s close friend, who was also the Duke’s mistress.
Meanwhile, Georgiana’s gambling led to mounting debts: on her death in 1806 they were found to be the equivalent
of £4 million in today’s money.
The rich, restless second Duke of Westminster, AKA Bendor, in his 20s
Another Park Lane mansion was Grosvenor House, belonging to the dukes
of Westminster and one of the largest in London, as befitted the family’s
status and wealth (their huge fortune came from their
ownership of Mayfair). Bendor, the blond and handsome second
duke (1879-1953) was known as one of the richest men in England, lavishing jewels
on his mistresses, chief among whom was Coco Chanel.
The picture gallery, Grosvenor House
A restless soul, Bendor would arrive without warning at any of
his houses (or yachts). All were kept ready: cars fuelled, silver polished, servants in livery.
But after the First World War, during which Grosvenor House
had been requisitioned as a hospital, land prices had risen so high that even for Bendor it had
become uneconomic and he sold it. It was demolished in 1927 and the Grosvenor House Hotel was built on the site.

At the other end of the scale was 8 Pelham
Place, the South Kensington home of Cecil Beaton from 1940 to 1975.
Superbly furnished by this brilliant photographer, it was
described loftily by the diarist Chips Channon (for whom the word ‘snob’ could have been invented – in his diaries he declares, ‘I am only really
happy with royalty’) as ‘a tiny but super-attractive snuffbox of a house’.
Beaton, himself no social slouch, ran him close: at his parties the women often wore stiletto heels,
which pitted the floor, and later he would point them out, saying, ‘That’s Princess Marina,
that’s Julie Andrews, that’s Vivien Leigh…’
French furnishings at 8 Pelham Place, the South Kensington home of Cecil Beaton
Beaton’s near neighbour in Pelham Place, until the mid-60s, was the
great stage designer Oliver Messel. When Messel’s nephew Tony Armstrong-Jones (later Lord Snowdon) became engaged to Princess Margaret,
Messel laid on a lunch, asking the Princess if there was anyone
she would particularly like to meet. She said she
had always greatly admired the witty cabaret star Bea
Lillie and so Messel invited her.
What none of them knew was that Bea Lillie had a
drinking habit. At the end of lunch she slid quietly under the table and was carried upstairs to sleep it off.
Tony and the Princess took their leave and Messel
rushed back to his studio, where he was busy with fittings for Elizabeth Taylor, only to be interrupted
by a telephone call.

‘It’s Kensington Police Station here, Mr Messel,’ said
the voice at the other end. ‘We thought you ought to know that there’s
a naked woman on your balcony, throwing bottles at everyone who passes by.’
Among the last of these fascinating residences to survive was the aforementioned Londonderry House.
Throughout the 20s and 30s it had seen receptions and balls,
hosted by the Londonderrys for their four daughters and two granddaughters.
When eventually it had to go, in July 1962, a farewell party for 300 was given by Alastair,
the 9th Marquess. Live sounds were supplied by a blues band featuring a swaggering
young Mick Jagger, no less – presaging the rise of
a whole new swinging London generation.

LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic
model is not broken but Europe’s biggest economy has lost competitiveness over the past decade, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Monday.
“We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,”
he told journalists ahead of a Eurogroup meeting.
The German economy is expected to contract by 0.2% in 2024, an economy ministry spokesperson said on Monday, cutting the forecast from
a previous projection of 0.3% growth this year.
If realised, this would be the second consecutive year
of contraction for Germany’s economy, which was the weakest among its
large euro zone peers last year with a 0.3% decline in gross domestic product.
Lindner said the government was introducing supply-side
measures to try to return the economy to growth.
“After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,” Lindner said,
adding that the growth initiative was just a first step for an economic turnaround, “but we have to build on it.”
AMBITION NEEDED
Lindner said “ambition” was needed to keep EU public finances
in order, or to put them back in order where necessary.
“I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,” Lindner said.
“What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.”
Lindner said he could not comment on the French budget plans because he had not had
the chance to talk with his French colleagues yet,
but he would do so on Monday evening.
“We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,” Lindner said.
“We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner.”

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author
dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio.
And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack
on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside
Story of how Qantas sold us out.
Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called
‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.
Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that
the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.
The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime Minister
has categorically denied.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11
of the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for
were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.
But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose
to shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.
He said Aston was using the accusations to sell
books and said he was hiding his employment history.
‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister
said.
But before the book even gets to the contents page there is
a photo of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate
communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked
for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before
Scott Morrison.
‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the first line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday
night, just before his book launch.
Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the
untrue claims about him the Prime Minister made.
‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public figures and leaders
who struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they
create,’ he said.

Aston, who is a former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the
Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which is, did you ask Qantas for

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime
Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.
Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while
so many people are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent, the latest blow to
his credibility has led to calls for him to resign.
Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.
‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get
this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you name it.
They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.
‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia. I’m not here trying to get a scalp.
That’s not what this book is about and it never was.’
But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being
had across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese.
‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years and he was the only
Prime Minister (I saw there).
‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the
front row of the International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister
who I’ve ever seen do that.
‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get
what it looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And
I think (the claims in the book are) just another example of that.’
In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s
travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones
the airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded.
The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct
line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.
‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s
empty when the flight closes, you’ll get
upgraded.
‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where
the ticket is converted and you are guaranteed. You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.
‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO.
No other executive can do that.
‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for
Anthony Albanese).’
Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during
his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians
to get up there.
‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too. Once you’ve experienced the front
of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.
‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …
‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel.
‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’
Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.
But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.
Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.
‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

Oct 22 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International’s (PMI) shares hit record highs
on Tuesday after the cigarette maker raised its annual
profit forecast and beat third-quarter estimates
thanks to higher prices and strong demand for its smoking alternatives.
PMI has invested billions of dollars in developing substitutes for cigarettes
as health-conscious consumers switch to smoking alternatives in some markets, including its
IQOS heated tobacco device and ZYN nicotine pouches, which are now a key focus
for investors.
U.S. ZYN shipments in the quarter grew 41.4% over the prior-year period,
rebounding after supply constraints curtailed rapid growth.
The Marlboro maker has been investing to expand production capacity for ZYN,
in an effort to meet strong demand.
The company’s flagship heated tobacco device, IQOS, also saw strong growth in regions such as Japan, Europe and Indonesia, reassuring investors after volumes
lagged expectations in the past.
“We delivered exceptionally strong performance, with record quarterly net revenues and earnings per share,” said Chief Executive
Officer Jacek Olczak, adding IQOS growth had also accelerated.
PMI’s shares rose 9%, and remained almost 8% higher at 11.43 a.m.
(1543 GMT) in New York trading.
The company also enjoyed higher shipment volumes for cigarettes, with higher pricing also
driving a 5.2% increase in revenues from its combustible tobacco business.
PMI raised its forecast for 2024 adjusted earnings per share, excluding currency, to between $6.85 and $6.91, compared with its prior range of $6.67 to $6.79.
It reported revenue of $9.91 billion for the third quarter, versus analysts’ estimates of $9.69 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Its quarterly adjusted profit of $1.91 per share also beat estimates of $1.82 per share.
Last week, Philip Morris said it, along with peers British American Tobacco and Japan Tobacco, would
pay C$32.5 billion ($23.6 billion) to settle long-running health-related lawsuits in Canada.

LONDON, May 22 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI)
said on Wednesday it had acquired a 14.7% indirect minority
stake in Egypt’s largest cigarette manufacturer, Eastern Company.
PMI, the world’s top tobacco company by market value,
did not disclose the value of the transaction. It said as part of the deal
the companies would explore potential areas of strategic collaboration, including heated tobacco products.
WHY IT MATTERS
Heated tobacco products heat packages of
ground up tobacco but do not burn it in an attempt to avoid the harmful chemicals generated via combustion.
PMI’s IQOS heated tobacco device is already the
market leader globally, but the products are mostly popular
in developed markets.
More recently, PMI has been looking to increase uptake in developing markets, including via cheaper heated tobacco devices.

Anthony Albanese has tried to claim his relationship with Alan Joyce was
a strictly professional one between a Prime Minister
and a corporate titan, as he battles claims the Qantas boss was his ‘personal travel agent’ for free flights and upgrades.
However that characterization of the relationship was at odds with that made by Mr
Joyce, who said he was ‘good mates’ with Mr Albanese and
had been ‘for years’.
In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime Minister had Mr Joyce arrange free tickets and upgrades, Mr Albanese distanced himself from the Qantas
chief.
When asked about about their relationship on Sunday Mr Albanese implied it was
purely in a professional capacity, having been Transport Minister
and shadow transport spokesperson before becoming Prime Minister.
‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline …
I had the same relationship with him that I have with John Borghetti as the CEO of Virgin,’
Mr Albanese said.
That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr Albanese and
Mr Joyce apparently greatly enjoying each other’s company.
Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high spirits on the
red carpet at the Qantas 100th Gala Dinner in March last
year.
In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the red carpet with one arm around
the prime minister and the other around Mr Albanese’s partner,
Jodie Haydon.
Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr Albanese attended Qantas’s unveiling of it’s special ‘Yes 23′ emblazoned
airplanes for the Voice referendum.
Former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce jovially walked the red carpet with one arm
around the prime minister and the other around his partner,
Jodie Haydon for a special anniversary event last year
Mr Joyce was seen touching Mr Albanese’s arm, with the PM bursting into laughter.
Even when Scott Morrison was PM, Mr Joyce enjoyed an apparently close relationship with Mr Albanese as the pair stood close together at the launch of the
Qantas’ landmark Perth to London flight in March, 2018.
During a Senate hearing in September 2023, Mr Joyce said he had been ‘friends for years’ with Mr
Albanese.
Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a membership to the prestigious and exclusive Chairman’s Lounge Mr Joyce refused to confirm or deny but talked up
his relationship with the Prime Minister.
‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,’ Mr Joyce said.
However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he lobbied the Prime
Minister on the controversial decision to lock competitor Qatar Airways out of domestic routes.
It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s Lounge,
by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston that Ms Haydon is
also a Chairman’s Lounge member.

Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy from Qantas and he would liaise personally with the former airline boss
for them.
Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while
in his various parliamentary jobs to ask for special upgrades for himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese
received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los
Angeles and Honolulu, with some being for holidays.
Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was for
work purposes and all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations describing Mr Albanese as being the ‘best friend’ of Mr
Joyce.
Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had directly contacted Mr
Joyce to request upgrades while holding a regulatory position in the transport sector.
‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up the phone to one of the most important
stakeholders in the portfolio asking for a free upgrade, then again, I think the Prime Minister would be able to answer those questions more effectively than anyone
else because I’m not aware of anyone else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.
It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of
the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge
The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce for upgrades on Tuesday at press conference in the NSW city of Newcastle.
‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed through calls – we discussed the first
flight from Australia to Dubai on the A380,
‘ he said.
‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of the rules.’
Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer Sarah Ferguson about how confident he was that Mr
Albanese had made calls personally to Mr Joyce for upgrades.
‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.
Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced
by Mr Joyce’s lobbying to block UAE airline Qatar domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to think that the Prime
Minister’s office had nothing to do with the decision.
Mr Albanese’s son Nathan, 24, has reportedly also been granted access to the
Qantas Chairman’s Lounge (pictured, Mr Albanese and son Nathan in May, 2022)
‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity in the Albanese government that
would not go through the Prime Minister’s office,’
Aston replied.
He noted the opening up of the Australian domestic market
Qatar had seemingly been sailing through with Transport Minister Catherine
King speaking warmly about the proposal until ‘everything changed’ to stop
it dead in tracks.
Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block Qatar was due
to Qantas lobbying her or any Labor colleagues.
Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade received from Qantas the Australian Financial Review reported
on Tuesday that he failed to do for his former wife
Carmel Tebbutt when the two traveled together.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has questioned the alleged personal
requests Mr Albanese made to Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs

Sky New host Sharri Markson on Monday night labeled Mr Joyce as ‘basically Albanese’s personal travel agent.’
‘This is all a question of integrity. Most Australians struggle to afford even an economy airfare.
They’d never be able to afford the luxury of
business class. It’s out of our reach,’ she
said.
‘Can Albanese truly be impartial when it comes to making decisions about Qantas when he’s been getting tens of thousands of dollars worth
of free upgrades to business class? The revelations puts
the decision he made as transport minister and prime minister under a cloud.
‘Aside from the integrity issues, this revelation is also politically lethal.
Albanese took care to curate a self-image of a housing commission boy who made it.
But now the perception is cementing of a long-term pollie enjoying the perks of public office.’
Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s apparent
close relationship with Mr Joyce is that the Labor
leader in a trade unionist advocate while Qantas attempted to break the power of
the Transport Workers Union by sacking 1700 staff during
Covid.
The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal Court in a
case brought by the union with Qantas facing possible hundreds
of thousands in compensation payouts.
The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender in semi-retired 3AW radio star Neil Mitchell.
‘Quick test: upgrade Albo is a bad look,’ Mitchell wrote on X.
‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised by having
Alan Joyce as a bestie? Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’
